It is the country side of Java that leads us to feel close to this land

Trip from Sarangan to Pacitan. An interesting landscape with much variation between Sarangan, Ponorogo and Pacitan. Mountains, hills, plains, and deep canyons. Many landslides in the wet season between Ponorogo and Pacitan, sometimes extremely dangerous for people.

Lake Sarangan, a crater, partial artificial and made already in the Dutch time. A mountain resort for the Sugar Lords of Madiun at 1282 meter elevation. Beautiful walkings are possible in the surroundings with probably the most stunning views of Java when the clouds dissolve.

Goa Gong in kabupaten Pacitan is only just 6 years accessible for the public. Without doubt the most fascinating stalactites you ever saw. Certainly nothing in Europe can compete with this cave.

river.jpg (30598 bytes)

The wild water river between Ponorogo and Pacitan. In reality the water-movements are spectacular, this does not show enough on the photo.

banjir.jpg (13494 bytes)

The effect of the wild water streams upstream shows in the lowlands where it floods large areas in the plain near Pacitan. This picture was taken near the beach in the bay of Pacitan.

bulletThe South coast beach. A walk along those beaches is something special. They are mostly completely deserted, sometimes you will meet some fishermen.
beach1.jpg (12865 bytes)

The beach near Watu Karung, about 20 km west of Pacitan. Note the huge waves which makes swimming impossible. They are often more than 3 meters high.

beach2.jpg (12330 bytes)

The beach in the Bay of Pacitan. Here you can swim safely. I like body-surfing on the incoming waves.

fishmen.jpg (16194 bytes)

Fishermen can do some fishing in bays and between islands, remnants of the eroded limestone coastline.

There are many caves in the limestone and we found the Agathe stones, for sale in the area, attractive for buying ole-ole's (small presents like trouser belts with agathe stones)

This photo gives a nice overview of the coast near Watu Karung. Very typical is the Pandanus vegetation. A primitive type of tree with very long leaves of which hats or mats can be woven. Pandanus is characteristic for the coast vegetation in Indonesia.
